Girls are admitted to the Sixth Form. The school has an illustrious heritage; founded in 1541 by Thomas Chipsey in Bridge Street it then moved to the present site in 1911.
Northampton School for Boys converted to become an academy school in September 2010. When its predecessor school, also called Northampton School for Boys, was last inspected by Ofsted it was judged to be outstanding overall. This school is larger than the average-sized secondary school. The school is a nationally designated teaching school.
