John Greaves, founder of the legendary British pop group Henry Cow (alongside Fred Frith and Robert Wyatt) has explored a variety of musical worlds through both collaborations and solo efforts. The singer and songwriter's most recent project has been setting texts by the poet Paul Verlaine.

Born in Wales but since 1984 resident in France, John Greaves retains permanent appeal to generations of avant-rock fans through his association with what became known as the Canterbury scene. From 1969 he was bassist with Henry Cow (with Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson and Chris Cutler) and played with Peter Blegvad's Slapp Happy, later joining two further key ensembles, National Health and Soft Heap.
Verlaine Gisant is the third entry in John Greaves' trilogy of albums dedicated to poet Paul Verlaine, the tortured and romantic French 'fin de siecle' poet who died in 1896. While the first two albums involved poems by Verlaine set to music, this album is different.
