The southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) is one of two species of elephant seals.It is the largest member of the clade Pinnipedia and the order Carnivora, as well as the largest extant marine mammal that is not a cetacean.It gets its name from its massive size and the large proboscis of the adult male, which is used to produce very loud roars, especially during the breeding season.
31 de oct. de 2023 · More than 1300 young elephant seals have died due to bird flu in Argentina, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) reported. This is the first time the bird flu virus has caused mass fatalities among seals in the country. The animals were found dead along the shores of the Valdés Peninsula in the southern province of Chubut.

The outbreak caused extreme mortality, with a 70% mortality rate in pups born in the 2023 breeding season, according to research co-led by the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center at the School of Veterinary Medicine and published in Marine Mammal Science .
