Badlands National Park. Badlands National Park is located in the northern United States in the southwestern corner of the state of South Dakota. The national park boundaries encompass an area of 379.3 square miles (982.4 sq km). The Badlands Wilderness is a further designation of an area with the national park.

Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.
Badlands National Park, steeped in Native American (specifically, Lakota) and French explorer lore, was founded in 1929. When it was originally proposed to the South Dakota Legislature in 1909, the petition for creating the park said in part, “nature has carved the surface of the earth into the most unique and interesting forms, and has exposed to an extent perhaps not elsewhere found …”
