Biografie. J. D. Souther wuchs in Amarillo, Texas auf. In seiner Jugend wurde er stark durch die Musik von Roy Orbison beeinflusst und versuchte, dessen Stil nachzuahmen. Ende der 1960er Jahre zog Souther nach Los Angeles um, wo er Glenn Frey kennenlernte, einen Gitarristen, der wie er selbst aus Detroit stammte, und der später als Gründungsmitglied der Eagles bekannt wurde.
The biggest hit for J.D. Souther as a solo artist was 1979’s “You’re Only Lonely.”. It peaked as high as number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100, and it was a number one hit on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary Songs chart. This was the title track from his third studio album.
