Su sonido varió en esta etapa hacia posturas más pop con la finalidad de conseguir una mayor aceptación comercial, grabando discos como “Giant For a Day” (1978) y “Civilian” (1980). Al no lograr los resultados deseados, Gentle Giant se separaron en el año 1980, destacando posteriormente el trabajo de Ray Shulman como productor, colaborando con grupos como Sugarcubes o The Sundays.
