She was also in love with an American suitor when her mother chose instead for her to marry an English Duke. She sailed to England as the Duchess of Marlborough in 1895 and took up residence in her new home―Blenheim Palace.
The aging Alva Vanderbilt bought a neighbouring chateau to be near her daughter. The 9 th Duke died in 1934 and Consuelo was once again welcome at Blenheim Palace as a guest of her son the 10 th Duke. The Balsans were evacuated from France in 1940 at the onset of the Nazi invasion and set-up home in Casa Alva south of Palm Beach in Florida.

Consuelo Balsan (formal, Consuelo, Ducesă de Marlborough; născută Consuelo Vanderbilt) (2 martie 1877 – 6 decembrie 1964), a fost membră proeminentă a familiei americane Vanderbilt.
