Jonas Edward Salk urodził się 28 października 1914 w Nowym Jorku jako najstarszy z trzech synów rosyjsko-żydowskich imigrantów Daniela i Dory Salk. Jako pierwszy członek rodziny poszedł na studia. W 1939 roku uzyskał dyplom lekarza w Szkole Medycznej Uniwersytetu Nowojorskiego i został lekarzem-naukowcem w szpitalu Mount Sinai.

While serving as the head of the Virus Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, Salk discovered and perfected the first vaccine found to be safe and effective in preventing polio or infantile paralysis, one of the most-feared and crippling diseases of the early 20th century.
