In the lead up to D-Day in an effort to disrupt the Germans as much as was physically possible, ‘Wrestler’ blew up 800 stretches of railway lines and supply routes and as the Allies advanced out of Normandy, 18,000 Germans gave themselves up as POW’s to ‘Wrestler’.

A female secret service agent has been honoured by the Royal Air Force - 63 years after first complaining at the "injustice" of not getting her "wings". Pearl Cornioley, formerly Witherington, became the leader of 1,500 French freedom fighters during World War II.

After she returned to civilian status, Pearl was recommended for the British Military Cross (MC) but unfortunately, the MC could not be awarded to a woman at that time (the rule was changed and the first woman was awarded the MC in 2006).

pearl cornioley Née le 24 juin 1914 à Paris dans une famille anglaise, Pearl Witherington restera fidèle à cette nationalité, tout en étant parfaitement bilingue. Cette capacité la conduit à s’engager dans un service secret anglais le « Special Excecutive Operations » (le S.O.E.), après que sa famille eut fui l’invasion allemande de 1940 et trouvé refuge à Londres.
