Klaus Kinski ble født 18. oktober 1926 i Zoppot i Fristaden Danzig (området var nøytralt, overveiende tysk etnisk og økonomisk integrert med Polen). Han var sønn av apotekeren Bruno Nakszynski og sykepleiersken Susanne Lutze, datter av en luthersk prest fra Danzig.Familien flyttet til Berlin i 1930, hvor Klaus gikk på Prins-Heinrich-Gymnasium i Schöneberg.
