In 1933, after leaving Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan sees a slave being punished at a cotton farm called Manderlay. Officially, slavery is illegal and Grace stands up against the farmers. She stays with some gangsters in Manderlay and tries to influence the situation. But when harvest time comes, Grace sees the social and economic reality of Manderlay.

After gangster Mulligan's (Willem Dafoe's) cars colony, fleeing northern justice, finds a hiding place in Alabama, spoiled, naive daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) refuses to travel on after seeing the Manderlay cotton plantation being run under slavery rules, called Mam's (Lauren Bacall's) law, including flogging.
Disregarding her fathers advice, Grace determines to right this injustice, and stays behind to liberate Manderlay. But in Von Triers world the road to hell is paved with naive good intentions, and Graces determination to bring democracy and equality doesnt allow for the free will the former slaves might choose to exercise, nor for her own uncomfortable erotic fantasies...
