She married Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1877, and their union was a disaster from the beginning. She has often been portrayed as a madwoman intent on ruining her husband’s life, but the truth is much more complicated.
On 26 March/7 April 1877, Antonina sent Tchaikovsky a written confession of her love for him. Both she and Tchaikovsky testified that they "began a correspondence", as a result of which the composer received her offer "of hand and heart" already in the early days of May 1877. On 20 May/1 June, she met Tchaikovsky.
Antonina remembered the day: a satin cloth on which she was supposed to stand had been forgotten, a bad omen; Pyotr and Anatoly left after the ceremony, sending a carriage for the others later to bring them to the wedding dinner at the Hotel Hermitage, described by one guest as “gloomy as a funeral”; after dinner, the parties returned to their quarters, to meet again at the train station ...
