Gaylord G. Birch (March 10, 1946 – April 14, 1996) was an American drummer for the bands Santana, Graham Central Station, Cold Blood, Pointer Sisters and Herbie Hancock.
Gaylord Birch (March 10, 1946 – April 14, 1996) was the drummer for the Pointer Sisters during 1973-1975 and 1977, and for Graham Central Station during 1976-1977 and 1979. Birch also appeared in the band Santana during 1976 and again in 1991 as well as playing the drums for a number of Herbie Hancock performances.

Then a few years ago I was reminded of them when this tune came on the radio very late one night as I was driving home from a gig. I checked out the record the next day, read up on the drummer, Gaylord Birch, who I wasn't really familiar with, and made a note to transcribe that cool breakdown.
