Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine open the School of American Ballet in New York City. At only 26 years of age, Lincoln Kirstein, a wealthy, Boston-born admirer of dance and the arts developed a plan to start a new American ballet tradition equal to the celebrated dance found in Europe.
The School and NYCB. The creation of the New York City Ballet in 1948 is a milestone in the history of the School of American Ballet, for it marked the realization of George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein’s primary goal in founding SAB: to create an American ballet company.
The School of American Ballet (SAB) is the associate school of the New York City Ballet, a ballet company based at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The school trains students from the age of six, with professional vocational ballet training for students aged 11–18.
The School of American Ballet’s training is designed for dedicated, focused students who show age-appropriate aptitude and physical development suited to the demands of classical training at all levels of development.
