Born in i605, second son of the poet John Donne, George became a soldier. Little is known about his early years, but in 1627 he served as captain and sergeant-major in the disastrous expedition against the French at the Isle of Re, an adventure which one contemporary claimed brought "no little dishonour to our nation."'
