In rail terminology, a railway turntable or wheelhouse is a device for turning round railway rolling stock, usually locomotives, so that they face the direction they came from. [1] [2] It is especially used in areas where economic considerations or a lack of sufficient space have served to weigh against the construction of a turnaround wye.

Use of turntables to turn locomotives dates back to the 1830s, many years before the phonograph was invented in 1877. Record players may have since been replaced with media players and mobile devices, but turntables on the railroad remain in rotation.
The combination of turntable and roundhouse proved very useful to both service and turn locomotives. Many roundhouses were built around the turn of the century. Roundhouses were built out of brick, stone, wood, or concrete. They could have only a few stalls or as many as 50.
The turntable is a steel construction which supports a bridge with rails in order to accommodate the vehicles. The turntable was in use at the locomotive depot in Bochum-Dahlhausen until it was shut down in 1969. Since 1977 the Bochum Railway Museum stands on the former compound of the locomotive depot.
