28 de jun. de 2013 · As you now know, neither of your sentences is correct. But you could say: I was standing in the queue before you arrived. Or: I joined the queue before you did. In US English, by the way, it would be I was standing in line and I joined the line; "queue" is British.

When I searched I found many usages of both "in step" and "at step". For example, Google returns: "at each step" — about 55,000,000 results. "in each step" — about 45,000,000 results. But which one is better to use in scientific papers?

RULE ONE. Do not skip the line. Call it whatever you want — line jumping, queue jumping, butting or skipping the line — the fact is, nobody likes it. You could almost call line-skipping a social taboo. Yet, people still tend to do it. Some skip ahead in the queue thanks to, as Ringo Starr would say, “a little help from my friends”.
