In Kyoto, in the late 1800s, the son of a local book-binder, Kyujuro Fukakusa sees his father murdered before his eyes and vows revenge. In his quest for justice, he answers the recruitment call of the Shinsengumi (or "The new squad") a newly-formed special brigade of samurai loyal to the shogun.
Originally published from January to October 1963 in Shonen Book, Osamu Tezuka’s The Shinsengumi (1963) is another of Tezuka’s samurai-style series, including Castle of Dawn (1959-61) and I Am Sarutobi (1960-61), which draw on well-known characters and events from Japan’s feudal history.
Set in an environment revolving around a Japan divided between the power of the Shogunate and the followers of the Emperor, Tezuka paints a compelling story rooted in the conflict between these two factions.
One animated film filled with the essence of his most famous pieces, and another that introduces a historical episode of Kyoto, are shown as a double feature movie with the Phoenix as a narrator. As we know, Tezuka Osamu's most famous work is Astro Boy, which has been popular among all generations.
