26 de may. de 2023 · The degree of visibility through natural rubies is referred to as transparency. It’s a quality that is often overlooked when discussing rubies. The categories of transparency include transparent, semi-transparent, translucent, semi-translucent/semi-opaque, and opaque.
3 de may. de 2017 · Translucent rubies are clear, extremely valuable and rare. Opaque rubies have so many inclusions that it is impossible to see through the stone. There are white, silky strands of the mineral rutile running through and bunching together inside the gemstone.
The orange colored powder transforms upon heating into a transparent to yellow-colored paste, which fills all fractures. After cooling the color of the paste is fully transparent and dramatically improves the overall transparency of the ruby.
Obvious inclusions, or inclusions that reduce transparency or brightness, lower a ruby’s value dramatically. If large and prominent inclusions are located under the table facet, they greatly diminish the transparency, brilliance, and value of the stone.
Rubies can be transparent and clean looking (with inclusions difficult to find even with magnification), but these are few and far between. Clarity affects the price of rubies based on the type, location, number, and size of the many possible inclusions.
A Ruby displaying asterism is known as a "Star Ruby", and if transparent can be very highly prized. Star Rubies exists in six ray stars, though twelve ray stars are also known. Rubies must be have good transparency to possess gem value. Opaque or semi-opaque Rubies have relatively little value, even if they display asterism.
All colored gems have a corundum base which on its own is naturally transparent, but the transparency begins to display various colors when these trace elements are present. Chromium imbues corundum with its red color and forms what is commonly known as a ruby.
