Koningsdag (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkoːnɪŋzdɑx] ⓘ) or King's Day is a national holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Celebrated on 27 April (26 April if the 27th is a Sunday), the date marks the birth of King Willem-Alexander.
In Amsterdam, King's Day (formerly Queen's Day) is by far the largest open-air event. An estimated 700,000 people visit the city on this day. Many of them do so wisely by train. Various places in the centre like Rembrandt Square, Spui, and Leidse Square are then full of people celebrating in orange.
Since 1885, while the Netherlands had only female monarchs, this national holiday has been called Queensday (Konninginnedag). However in 2013, Queen Beatrix son Crown Prince Willem Alexander has taken the throne as the King of the Netherlands.
