14 de mar. de 2016 · Pandas play an essential role in the bamboo forests of the Yangtze Basin by spreading seeds as they roam, increasing vegetation. WWF works to make this area more sustainable to protect pandas and other endangered species, such as the golden monkey and takin.
Giant pandas have unique feeding habits that revolve around their primarily bamboo-based diet. Spending around 14 hours per day feeding, pandas assume a sitting position and use their teeth to strip the tough outer layers of bamboo before consuming the inner tissue.
Indeed, as members of the bear family, giant pandas possess the digestive system of a carnivore, although they have evolved to depend almost entirely on bamboo. This reliance on bamboo leaves them vulnerable to any loss of their habitat – currently the major threat to their survival.

30 de may. de 2024 · giant panda. Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) feeding on bamboo. As much as 90–98 percent of the panda’s diet consists of the leaves, shoots, and stems of bamboo, a large grass available year-round in much of China’s forested regions.
The giant panda has an insatiable appetite for bamboo. A typical animal eats half the day—a full 12 out of every 24 hours—and relieves itself dozens of times a day.
An adult panda can weigh about 100-150kg and grow up to 150cm long. Pandas feed for up to 14 hours a day and can eat up to 38kg of bamboo. When born, a panda cub is just 1/900th the size of its mother. Pandas are good swimmers and excellent tree climbers.
