La palabra malaya orangután significa persona del bosque. Estos primates anaranjados y de pelo largo, presentes nicamente en Sumatra y Borneo, son muy inteligentes y están estrechamente emparentados con los humanos. Los orangutanes tienen una enorme envergadura de brazos.
Los orangutanes (Pongo) son un género de primates homínidos que comprende tres especies de grandes simios originarios de Indonesia y Malasia. Al orangután de Borneo (Pongo pygmaeus) y al de Sumatra (Pongo abelii) se sumó en noviembre de 2017 una tercera especie, cuando se identificó y describió el orangután de Tapanuli (Pongo tapanuliensis).
Orangutans are great apes native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. They are now found only in parts of Borneo and Sumatra, but during the Pleistocene they ranged throughout Southeast Asia and South China. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species.
The Malay word orangutan means “person of the forest.”. These long-haired, orangish primates, found only in Sumatra and Borneo, are highly intelligent and are close relatives of humans.
A century ago there were probably more than 230,000 orangutans in total, but the Bornean orangutan is now estimated at about 104,700 based on updated geographic range (Endangered) and the Sumatran about 7,500 (Critically Endangered). A third species of orangutan was announced in November, 2017.

Most authorities divide orangutans into three species, and Bornean orangutans are divided into three subspecies: P. pygmaeus morio, P. pygmaeus pygmaeus, and P. pygmaeus wurmbii.

Physical Description. Orangutans have long, sparse orange or reddish hair unequally distributed over their bodies. They have large jaws and flattened noses in concave faces. Orangutans are the largest arboreal mammals and are very well adapted to life in the trees, with arms much longer than their legs.
