14 de dic. de 2021 · Silkies can (and should) be kept outdoors just like any other chicken. However, there are a few special considerations. Most importantly, their down feathers become drenched very quickly in the rain, so it is imperative that they have a dry area that is blocked from blowing rain and cold wind.

Their bodies should be broad and stout, the back is short, and the breast is full. They have five toes instead of the usual four found in chickens.
19 de sept. de 2023 · Make sure that part of the yard is shaded or covered so that the silkies have protection from rain and heavy sun. You can set up an overhang or plant trees for shade. Overhead covering is still important for free-range chickens since predators could attack them during the day.
So Silkies don't do well in a wet climate, unless they can be sheltered properly. For the same reason, they don't like snow. Their feathers may look thick but actually they don't do a good job of keeping Silkies warm, so very cold climates aren't good - unless, again, they can be kept warm and sheltered. 27 de abr. de 2023 · Silkie chickens can tolerate cooler temperatures better than you think, but you need to make sure they have a shelter to protect them from rain and wind and have other coop mates to huddle with. If this is provided for them, they should do just fine with temperatures down to 0 degrees.
22 de jun. de 2019 · Their feathers are not waterproof, so you need to provide them with ample shelter during rainy periods. The same rule applies to snow – although this breed can withstand the cold, wet precipitation of any kind is a major problem.
They don’t stay tightly woven together as other breeds do, so it rains they are more likely to get soaked rather than the water running off their feathers the way it does with other breeds. Because of their difficulty with rain, it’s important to make sure their coop is weatherproof to keep them dry and warm.
