When construction began on Fort East Martello in 1862, the United States was embroiled in the Civil War. Despite the fact that the Union controlled the island during the war, Key West’s inhabitants were deeply pro-Confederate.
Constructed in 1862 during the Civil War, this brick fortress now serves as an excellent historical museum (the first in the Florida Keys) and art gallery. The vaulted brick ceilings and curved walls enhance the charm of an eclectic collection which highlights Key West's haunted past.
After extensive renovations and fabrication of a roof, the Fort East Martello Museum formally opened to the public on February 4, 1951. Historic preservation work continued for decades, and in 1983, the citadel’s second floor was replaced using the original plans for the fort’s construction.
