A study of Emperor Penguins in their natural habitat found that they spend 10.7 hours sleeping during a 24 hour day with the average length of each sleep period being around 4 – 7.5 minutes.
Penguins sleep in short bursts of just a few minutes during the day and evening, protecting them from predators. They can sleep on ice, in water and in small holes. They can sleep standing up, minimising contact with the ice. They will sleep in groups to protect from the cold and predators.
The emperor penguin ( Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is endemic to Antarctica. The male and female are similar in plumage and size, reaching 100 cm (39 in) in length and weighing from 22 to 45 kg (49 to 99 lb).
