18 de may. de 2020 · Odyssey is his fourth album and last purely great album. It’s a pity that the Malmsteen/Turner line up couldn’t last. Odyssey is by far the most accessible album that Malmsteen did. The songwriting is very melodic and the guitar playing is somewhat reigned in.
With new vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (who, despite lacking the edge of previous singer Mark Boals, makes up for it with a much stronger, more confident presence) in tow, Odyssey finds Malmsteen cutting synth-laden rock tunes like “Hold On,” “Crystal Ball,” and the borderline glam metal hit “Heaven Tonight.”.

Malmsteen bet for a more song-oriented formula while his compositions became more melodic, somehow glammy and cheesy - think about a heavier version of the AOR Rainbow. With that 360° spin, much of his original formula's gothic and dark components faded away, though the powerful epic atmosphere generated by the keyboard notes is still present.

But the power metal "Rising Force" is probably the best vocal song Yngwie ever did. The balladish "Dreaming (Tell Me)" is actually quite good. "Krakatau" is a great instrumental track. Bottom Line: The best vocal album in the Malmsteen library actually has some great metal.
