Based on the real life of a Korean War flying ace, The McConnell Story (1955) stars Alan Ladd as Joseph C. "Mac" McConnell, Jr., and June Allyson as his wife, Pearl. The film opens near the beginning of World War II when McConnell goes AWOL from the army in order to take private flying lessons at a local air field.
Joseph "Mac" McConnell Jr. (Alan Ladd) dreams of piloting airplanes, so much that he goes AWOL from an Army base to take flying lessons. When the military police go looking for him, Mac hitches...
Assigned to the medical corps during WWII, McConnell takes private flying lessons so that he'll qualify for pilot duty. After serving with distinction in the war, McConnell becomes a pioneer in the testing of jet aircraft. The film ends when McConnell dies while testing a new Sabre Jet.
