In recent years, anecdotal evidence and sightings from forestry workers have confirmed that kea use exotic plantation forests in the Nelson/Tasman region.

We investigated the calling behaviour of Kea Nestor notabilis mothers during the nesting period to determine whether maternal vocaliza-tions were adapted in a way that could increase the chance of brood success. A microphone was installed inside the nest to record calls produced both inside the nest and in the direct vicinity.
