Respiratory gas exchange is conducted through the thin, gas-permeable skin and the gills. In addition to these structures, frog tadpoles use their large tail fins for respiration; the tail fins contain blood vessels and are important respiratory structures because of their large surface area.
They live on land but can also spend time in the water. Frogs breathe through organs that serve as a combination of lungs and gills. Unlike fish, which use only gills for breathing and must stay in the water to do so, frogs use both lungs and gills to take oxygen from the air or from the water.

Frogs only have tadpoles during the tadpole stage, as they need them to survive in the aquatic environment. However, as they metamorphose into adult frogs, the gills are reabsorbed and replaced by lungs.

The frogs breathe through their skin underwater during this stage. Once they become mature, the adult frog uses its lungs to breathe air through its nostrils and throat.
