29 de jun. de 2022 · What distinguishes middle, low, and high art? In this article, I give an ameliorative analysis of these concepts. On what I call the Capacity View, the distinction between low, middle, and high art depends on the relation between an artwork’s perceiver (specifically her aesthetic responsive capacities) and the perceived artwork.
HIGH ART VERSUS LOW ART John A. Fisher Hamlet versus South Park; J. Alfred Prufrock versus Mickey Mouse; Beethoven’s Fifth symphony versus Justin Bieber’s “Eenie Meanie.” Such contrasts instantly evoke a familiar and important cultural divide, typically expressed as the distinction between “high” and “low” art.

High art is the serious stuff, low art is made for the masses. You can spot the difference in where it lives, high art resides in museums, galleries, and Sotherby auctions while low art is sold at poster shops and displayed on college door room walls.

In the 18th century, philosophers began to distinguish between “art for art’s sake,” such as painting, music, and sculpture, and craft, which refers to everything that was created with utility in mind.
High art is usually intellectual and takes refined taste to appreciate. Low art, by contrast, is art merely for the sake of pleasure. While Monet may be high art, Garfield is certainly low art in this distinction.
