Following the conclusion of the war, the 1949 Armistice Agreements formally granted Beersheba to Israel. The town was then transformed into an Israeli city with only an exiguous Arab minority.

Beersheba (Hebrew: בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע , Be'er Sheva, Turkish: Birüssebi) is the largest city in the Negev desert of southern Israel, often referred to as the "Capital of the Negev." In the Bible, water-rich Beersheba was once the home of each of the major Hebrew patriarchs, Abraham , Isaac , and Jacob .
Today, Be’er Sheva (Beersheba) is a thriving city in Israel ’s Negev desert, home to nearly a quarter million residents. This city has a long and storied Jewish history, dating back to the days of Abraham who negotiated treaties with the locals and lived there for decades.
During King David’s reign, the Israelites conquered Beersheba, which became a city of the tribe of Simeon and was later incorporated into the tribe of Judah (Josh. 15:28 ; 19:2 ). The city became the capital of the “Negev Yehuda."
Of more than 200 such mounds in Israel, the three sites of Megiddo, Hazor and Beer Sheba are representative of those that contain substantial remains of cities with biblical connections, and are strongly associated with events portrayed in the bible.
