The Kiruna mine is the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world. [1] [unreliable source?] The mine is located in Kiruna in Norrbotten County, Lapland, Sweden. [1] The mine is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB), a large Swedish mining company.

With an ore body 4km-long, 80m-thick and reaching a depth of 2km, LKAB’s Kiruna is the world’s largest, most modern underground iron ore mine located in northern Sweden.
The vast majority of our mining takes place several hundred metres underground, in the mines in Kiirunavaara (Kiruna) and Malmberget (Gällivare), which are the world’s two largest underground iron ore mines. In Svappavaara, the ore is mined in the Leveäniemi surface mine.
Underground mining is used to extract ore from below the surface of the earth safely, economically and with as little waste as possible. The entry from the surface to an underground mine may be through a horizontal or vertical tunnel, known as an adit, shaft or decline.

Kiruna is a small miners’ town with 17 000 inhabitants, most of whom are connected to the mining company. Figure 1.
Underground or shaft mining. To be competitive, iron mining must be done on a very large scale. Surface mining is the preferred choice, although there are exceptions. Small, low-capacity mines have rapidly disappeared.
