The offense has to try to get 10 yards in 4 tries or they will turn the ball over to the other team. Instead of the referees and announcers saying first down and 10 yards to go, they will say 1st and 10.

A "down" in football is essentially an individual play. Each time the offense takes possession, they get a set of downs. The offense is given four downs to advance the ball 10 yards forward.
