It attempts less, risks less, and is sadly mired in the prejudices of its time. I still wish more people were aware of the book; Smith deserves credit for creation of the story.

As the reader, we soon come to understand what dogs “believe” their humans are like. I found this perspective unique to read from, as I had just finished reading The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty.
