Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) is Thomas Hardy 's fourth published novel and his first major literary success. It was published on 23 November 1874. It originally appeared anonymously as a monthly serial in Cornhill Magazine, where it gained a wide readership.

Plot. The film is set in about 1870 in Britain. While working on her aunt's farm in Dorset, Bathsheba Everdene ( Carey Mulligan) meets neighbouring farmer, Gabriel Oak ( Matthias Schoenaerts ). He eventually proposes, but the headstrong Bathsheba declines, saying she is too independent.

Bathsheba, the orphaned daughter of townspeople, is raised by her aunt in the countryside. She is handsome and can be vain about her appearance.
