La Universidad de Gotinga ( Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, o Georgia Augusta) fue fundada en el año 1734 por Jorge II, príncipe elector de Hanóver y rey de Gran Bretaña. Abrió sus puertas a los estudiantes en 1737. Pronto consiguió un puesto destacado en el mundo de las ciencias.
