Babylonia briefly became the major power in the region after Hammurabi (fl. c. 1792 –1752 BC middle chronology, or c. 1696 –1654 BC, short chronology) created a short-lived empire, succeeding the earlier Akkadian Empire, Third Dynasty of Ur, and Old Assyrian Empire.
Babylonia, ancient cultural region occupying southeastern Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (modern southern Iraq from around Baghdad to the Persian Gulf). The king largely responsible for Babylonia’s rise to power was Hammurabi (reigned c. 1792–1750 BCE).

Babylon was the capital of the Babylonian and Neo-Babylonian Empires. It was a sprawling, heavily-populated city with enormous walls and multiple palaces and temples. Famous structures and artifacts include the temple of Marduk, the Ishtar Gate, and stelae upon which Hammurabi’s Code was written.
