Anakin Skywalker has taken quite a lot of damage throughout his entire life in the Star Wars timeline. He's been dismembered, blown up, electrocuted, burned alive etc repeatedly. Here's what I can remember: electrocuted by Count Dooku and lost his right arm on Geonosis.

The reason obi didn't do it earlier was because he didn't want to. Both men were blinded, anakin by rage, obi wan by his brotherly attattachment to his padawan.
