Biomes are very large ecological areas e.g. tropical rainforest. The map below shows 10 of the world’s main biomes. The distribution of ecosystems is affected by local factors including: Climate (rainfall, temperature and sunshine hours) is the main factor that influences the distribution of ecosystems.

There is a map of the world's major biomes. This site explains in simple terms what distinguishes one biome from the other. For example a desert may have an unusual amount of vegetation and wildlife but not enough to be classified as grassland.
