The answer might be more complex than you realize. ICMEC considers any child under the age of 18 whose whereabouts are unknown to be “missing”. This includes children who have been abducted, abandoned, separated from their parents, or are running away from a home that is not safe.

The numbers are staggering: At the end of 2020, 35.5 million children under the age of 18 were living outside their country of birth. An estimated 33.7 million children – or 1 in 69 children globally – have been displaced within their own borders or across them, mostly due to conflict and violence.
We stand on a global stage as the world looks to us as a leader in child protection. At the same time, we prioritize reaching new communities across our nation to provide them with critical services and resources. As you’ll see in this report, 2022 was a milestone year for us in many ways.
