Chief among these is Interior (Innenraum), 1981. It's a huge, striking work, covering about nine square metres. We chose it as the main image for our book jacket, and while its credit sometimes reads ‘oil, acrylic, and paper on canvas’, there’s actually a lot more going on in there, as our author, professor Matthew Biro, makes clear.

The pictorical rhetoric of Innenraum is regular Kiefer: fleeing perspective countered by frontal materiality, all imbued with light/dark, sonorous tones and chafing colors. The underlying photograph is made funereal by black patches over the hall’s sumptuous mosaic panels.

24 de sept. de 2014 · This is exemplified in paintings such as Interior (1981), which depicts a room in the New Reich Chancellery, designed by Hitler’s favourite architect, Albert Speer. The building had been destroyed immediately after the war, but Kiefer chooses to depict the moment of ruination itself.
