Odenkirk and David Cross (shown in OP's picture) created a sketch comedy show in 1995 called Mr. Show with Bob and David, and before that he was a writer on Saturday Night (1987) live and The Ben Stiller Show (1992).
But I will say that one of the things that really took me out of the reality was seeing Bob and David in scenes together. It made it feel like a parody of an Oscar bait movie (even more than it already did).
