The SVD (СВД; Russian: Снайперская Винтовка Драгунова, romanized : Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, lit. 'Dragunov Sniper Rifle'), GRAU index 6V1, [2] is a semi-automatic designated marksman rifle / sniper rifle [3] chambered in the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, developed in the Soviet Union .
The Chinese adopted the Type-79 sniper rifle in 1979. This was an unlicensed copy of the Russian Dragunov that had been reverse engineered from captured SVDs. This rifle was then produced for commercial sales and marketed as the NDM-86 in the United States.

Developed as a DMR for the Soviet army, the SVD is still much of the world’s go-to sniper rifle. Why Is the SVD As Successful As It Is? Thoughtful design choices balance weight, durability and accuracy. Large production numbers and widespread proliferation make them the most common marksman rifles in the world.
