The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We do this through lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and flood rescue.
Lifeboats at shore shortly after the Costa Concordia capsized on the coast of Isola del Giglio. A lifeboat or liferaft is a small, rigid or inflatable boat carried for emergency evacuation in the event of a disaster aboard a ship. Lifeboat drills are required by law on larger commercial ships.
From large all-weather lifeboats to smaller inshore vessels, each has been designed and refined to be highly capable rescue craft. RNLI lifeboats are divided into two categories: all-weather lifeboats and inshore lifeboats. The different classes of lifeboat within these categories mean we can reach people in all kinds of situations and locations.
