Labyrinth seal. A labyrinth seal is a type of mechanical seal that provides a tortuous path to help prevent leakage. An example of such a seal is sometimes found within an axle 's bearing to help prevent the leakage of the oil lubricating the bearing.
A good rule of thumb for labyrinth seals is to set the radial seal clearance at .001” per inch of shaft diameter for spring-backed seals. Also, set a minimum radial clearance at 1 1⁄2 times the bearing clearance to avoid rotor dynamic problems. For more information: Neal Wikert Email: rms@rotatingmachinery.com Tel: 484-821-0702.
Superior protection and easier alignment. The SKF Taconite Seal consists of two rings (one stationary and one rotating) which form a very narrow labyrinth between the two rings. The rotating labyrinth ring carries a V-ring seal that seals against the stationary labyrinth ring.
Labyrinth seals are a critical component applied across rotating equipment to seal high pressure areas from low pressure areas and prevent contamination of the process. Designed as a non-contacting seal with a precise clearance over the rotor, labyrinth seals directly affect equipment efficiency.
SKF non-contact labyrinth seals provide an ideal solution. Capable of excluding contamination as effectively as contact or lip seals, SKF non-contact labyrinth seals also operate with little or no friction. The result? Extended service life and greater reliability.
