Basketball : a YMCA invention. James Naismith was a Canadian farm boy from Almonte, Ontario, a small town just a few kilometres from Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. He was born on November 6, 1861. His father and mother died when he was eight and thereafter he made his home with an uncle.

James Naismith 1 ( Almonte, Canadá, 6 de noviembre de 1861- Lawrence, EE. UU., 28 de noviembre de 1939) fue un profesor de educación física, entrenador y capellán castrense canadiense. Inventó el deporte del baloncesto en 1891 y también se le atribuye el uso del primer casco de fútbol americano.
Naismith was a classmate of Amos Alonzo Stagg at the YMCA School, where Stagg coached the football team. They became close friends and Naismith played on the football team and Stagg played on the basketball team. Naismith invited Stagg to play in the first public basketball game on March 12, 1892.
Throwing a ball into half-bushel peach baskets was what Canadian-American educator James Naismith, at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, suggested in December 1891 when asked to devise an indoor game that could keep men physically fit during the winter.
