Awake gems is a new currency that can obtain from R$ (If you are rush), or from free way like doing speed raid for 25 times (Give 125) and from raid (10% drop, about 2 or 3). The amount to awake the character is always 500 each and can be upgrade anytime.
Gems are an in-game currency used to buy Heroes and Costumes (Awake Heroes, if possible). You can see the number of gems you have by looking in the top-left corner of the screen next to the gem icon.

I just got dio and don’t have nearly enough time to get the keys to awaken him, would I be able to awaken him after I’m not able to get the keys like with raid tokens or something?

This patch includes a new battle pass, character awakenings, limited characters, costumes, and a whole lot more. You will also find bug fixes and various changes to the game.
