25 de abr. de 2017 · Definition. Apophis (also known as Apep) is the Great Serpent, enemy of the sun god Ra, in ancient Egyptian religion. The sun was Ra's great barge which sailed through the sky from dawn to dusk and then descended into the underworld.

Apep, also spelled Apepi, Aapep (Ancient Egyptian: ꜥꜣpp(y) *ʻAʼpāp(ī); Coptic: Ⲁⲫⲱⲫ Aphōph), or Apophis (/ ə ˈ p oʊ f ɪ s /; Ancient Greek: Ἄποφις Ápophis), was the ancient Egyptian deity who embodied darkness and disorder, and was thus the opponent of light and Ma'at (order/truth).
Above Apophis, a scarab spreads its wings, symbolizing the rising sun and Ra’s victory over Apophis and chaos. The dark lines across Apophis’s body represent the knives that Ra and others used to defeat the great snake.
31 de oct. de 2016 · Appearance. Apophis is literally a giant snake, which is why he had nicknames such as “evil lizard” or “ serpent from the Nile”. There have been some stories about the details of his appearance. For example, there are legends that say his body is 50 feet (nearly 15 meters) long.
The Greeks had their Scylla, Charybdis, Echidna, and Typhon. In Egypt’s lore, the only true monster was chaos which took the form of a giant snake. Its name was Apep (Apophis in Ancient Greek). We will look more closely at this creature in a moment.
If Apophis can defeat the sun god as he journeys through the Underworld each night and prevent the sun from rising, all of creation will collapse into nothingness. But the image of the rising sun in the form of the scarab just above the snake attests to Ra’s victory.
