Yuan Shikai (chino tradicional: 袁世凱, chino simplificado: 袁世凯, pinyin: Yuán Shìkǎi, Wade-Giles: Yüan Shih-k'ai; 16 de septiembre de 1859-6 de junio de 1916) fue un militar y político chino durante el final de la dinastía Qing y la primera época de la República de China.
Yuan Shikai ( simplified Chinese : 袁世凯; traditional Chinese : 袁世凱; pinyin : Yuán Shìkǎi; 16 September 1859 – 6 June 1916) was a Chinese general and statesman who served as the second provisional president of the Republic of China, head of the Beiyang government from 1912 to 1916 and Emperor of China from 1915 to 1916.
Yuan Shikai fue un político y militar chino que lideró la transición de China desde la dinastía Qing a la República de China. Su régimen fue dictatorial y fracasó ante las presiones internas y externas, especialmente de Japón.
En los últimos días de la dinastía, la corte Qing hizo un último intento de reelegir a Yuan Shikai, quien estuvo exiliado políticamente entre 1908 y 1911 por participar en el acuerdo de protección mutua.
Yuan Shikai nació en una familia manchú de clase media en la provincia de Henan, en el centro de China. Recibió una educación confuciana tradicional, pero resultó ser un estudiante errático y un joven problemático, que prefería actividades al aire libre como la caza, la equitación y las artes marciales.

Yuan was from a landed military family of Xiangcheng in Henan province.
Yuan Shikai rose to fame during the First Sino-Japanese War as the commander of the Chinese stationary forces in Korea. He was fortuitously recalled to Beijing several days before the Chinese forces were attacked, and avoided the humiliation of the Chinese armies by the Japanese.
