The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer, pronounced [bɛʁˌliːnɐ ˈmaʊɐ] ⓘ) was a guarded concrete barrier that encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, separating it from East Berlin and the German Democratic Republic (GDR; East Germany).

The system of walls, electrified fences, and fortifications extended 28 miles through Berlin and extended a further 75 miles around West Berlin.
Along roughly 160 kilometers, the Berlin Wall Trail follows the former course of the Wall around what was once the western half of the city. The Trail includes both the inner-city border and the “outer ring.”
